Linked to place, language or dialect should be considered important. Please review the ISO 639 family of standards and the TC37 concept standards as database system; in particular ISO 639-6, a hierarchical system of languages and dialects including an extensible system that incorporates written, spoken, signed and sung as well as the ability to code linguistic register and social/group terminology. This is key to a geospatial system that crosses cultural and knowledge boundaries providing a system that is accessible to all. Writing systems and scripts should also be taken into consideration as well as their encoding - UNICODE. The ISO 639 family of standards are freely available.
